Having a staff member say “don’t work here, it’s not worth it” as you go in and drop off your resume. I’ve never seen someone with as dead a look in their eyes.

Local grocery store. Honestly, from my experiences with that store, I can’t blame her.

is there a good grocery store to work at? I’m guessing this isn’t your dream job and just a stepping stone into the work force. Most of us have had those jobs. I worked at McDonald’s. I’d tell people to turn around too.

I was told to go clean the puke out of the play place. I told my manager I could either go back to what I was doing or go home but certainly could not go clean that up.

I’ve already done a stint in retail (never forget, never forgive ), so I’m cool with most things. Just looking for part-time work during my other job applications that could take up to a year.

I went for an interview once and after my potential boss finished giving me a tour and talking with me, he turned me over to some of the people in his department.

A few just said hi and asked about my background. One of them gave me a problem to work out - it was from his previous job, a piece of test gear that kept breaking overnight, and took them forever to figure out why. He explained the setup and how the system worked, and answered questions as I tried to troubleshoot this virtual problem.

But the last guy took me aside into an empty room and said “Look, I’ve seen your resume, and you’ve done some awesome stuff. If you want to continue to do awesome stuff, don’t work here.”

I'd tell people that too, except if we get some help out here then I can quit.

But if you don’t have people applying and then you threaten to leave, you can use that as a bargaining tool to get paid more. Unless it’s a truly awful job. Then yeah, lie away.

I turned down an IT job at Kimberly Clark, because they introduced me to my soon to be coworker (she looked absolutely miserable). I would of taken the job had I not interacted with her.

Nah, my salary is pretty much capped here. If they would let me use modern technology to do more work in less time I’d have an argument for more money but that’s too much for them to handle. My immediate boss is awesome though (I get occasional off-the-record vacation days) so it's worth it for now.

a few jobs ago, the company I worked for was “blacklisted” by a number of recruiters. they’d refuse to refer anyone to the company because it was notorious for chewing up and spitting out program managers.

I’ve had someone say this to me at an actual interview.

One of my previous employers flew a kid fresh out of college in for an interview. After a day of interviewing, our boss had a couple of us younger employees take the kid out to dinner and then drop him off at his hotel. The kid declined the job offer and our boss didn’t ask us to take anymore potential hires out for dinner after that, lol.

There’s a grocery chain in Texas that was founded here and now extends across the state and into parts of northern Mexico. It’s called HEB. It’s a pretty good place to work. They pay decent salaries; when they had their IPO, they gave a lot of their employees stock options; they do a lot of philanthropy each year via disaster relief, regular donations to food banks, and college scholarships. They offer well-supported paths to promotion within the company, too. And they have a good number of employees who work for them for 10, 20 or more years.

It’s not in a small town in SW Ontario is it? The place I was at ate people. I couldn’t hire fast enough sometimes and recruiters were too busy finding work for people leaving to find anyone willing to work there.
